The Ukulele Luau is as much about learning as it is about having fun..well not really, but improving your playing skills definitely comes in second place as our overall goal for your Luau experience. Here are the workshops that you'll be able to attend for free at the Luau. |

Workshop I: Beginning to Intermediate Ukulele Instruction by Narciso Lobo - In this class you'll learn how to get started playing ukulele. We'll cover holding, strumming, picking, chord recognition and chord creation, basic music theory as it applies to the uke, different instrument styles and sizes, choosing and caring for the ukulele, effective practice strategies, how to get the most enjoyment from your uke, general ukulele industry info, and so on. Attendees will need to bring a G-C-E-A (standard uke tuning in the key of C) tuned ukulele with them. When you complete the course you'll be able to play the ukulele...GUARANTEED! |

Workshop II: Jam Etiquette by John Hall and friends - In this class you'll learn how to play along with others. THIS CLASS SHOULD BE A REQUIRED COURSE for all ukulele players! In this great workshop, you'll learn the importance of rhythm, timing, knowing when to be silent, coming prepared with lyric ladened song sheets, and how to jump in and make everybody happy you did. |

Workshop VI: Spreading Ukulele Aloha by John Hall - In this class you'll learn how to get the most out of the ukulele and you'll learn the most effective ways to plant the Ukulele Aloha (Love) seeds in others. You'll learn about all of the popular or recommended forums and sources of up to date info, you'll learn about all of the popular ukulele events and their schedules as well as which events are NOT doing the ukulele any favors. You learn about the newsletters, clubs, societies, and where to find good uke featured CD's and performances. You'll learn how to host your own uke event and your own ukulele instruction workshops. |

Workshop III: Advanced Ukulele Instruction by Philip Fernandez - In this class you'll learn soloing, you'll learn tips and tricks on how to find your way around the entire fret board, advanced strumming techniques, and much more. |

Workshop V: Playing Blues on Ukulele by Jason Arimoto - In this class you'll learn the blues scales, bending notes, the popular blues chord progressions, some blues tunes, and popular blues licks. You'll learn tips on playing along with a guitar player and a harmonica player. You'll learn who's who in the blues ukulele world and where to go to find more purveyors of blues ukulele. |

Workshop IV: Playing Island Style Music on Ukulele Jason Arimoto - In this class you'll learn how to play Hawaiian music so that it sounds the way it was meant to. You'll learn about the best books, the best resources, and where to find more of this beautfiul music. You'll learn the particular strumming styles and the most used chord combinations that make Hawaiian music so special. |

Workshop VII: Comedic Songwriting Workshop by Matt Griffo - In this 1 hour workshop you'll go over the basics of comedic songwriting: Setups and payoffs, chorus', the bridge, rhyme schemes, syllable counts, styles, and what you're satirizing. (And if you're not.) Everyone writes a song by the end of the workshop. Matt Griffo is a music director at the Second City in Chicago. He bases his teachings on the Second City style. (Second City being the famed comedy theater and school where Bill Murray, John Belushi, Mike Myers, Chris Farley, Steven Colbert, Steve Correll, Tina Fey, and an ongoing list of other great comedians come from.) But he also puts in what he thinks is necessary to learn comedic songwriting from his experiences in the comedy world. This workshop is a fun whirlwind of information and you'll come out with a whole new understanding of comedy. |
